About SPAN

ABOUT SPAN CV

We walk so no one walks alone.

SPAN (Suicide Prevention Awareness Network) Central Victoria is a community-led movement built on compassion, connection, and the belief that conversations can change — and save — lives.

Our Annual Walk brings people together to honour those we’ve lost, support those who are struggling, and remind each other that hope is always within reach.

Throughout the year, we continue to advocate, educate, and create safe spaces for open dialogue around suicide and mental health. At SPAN, we’re walking towards a future where no one feels alone in their pain — and where support is always close by.

Since the tragic suicides of two of her children, Angela and Stuart, Alannah has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of suicide prevention and educate others on what we can do to help those who are struggling. Alannah shares with us her experiences of losing loved ones to suicide, and how painful the silence of others can be.

WHY WE WALK

Every year on the third Sunday in March, we come together in Bendigo to walk through the streets — side by side, step by step.

The SPAN Annual Walk is our flagship event, bringing hundreds of people from across Victoria to reflect, connect, and stand together in hope.

We walk to:

  • Honour those we’ve lost to suicide

  • Support those who are struggling

  • Encourage real, stigma-free conversations about mental health

  • Remind our community that help is always available

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility — and that a connected, informed, and compassionate community can save lives.

SPAN HISTORY

The Bendigo Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SPAN) committee was formed as a community-based organisation in 2011, with the aim of increasing community awareness of the incidence and impact of suicide.

Membership of this incorporated community committee is around 10 and comprises a number of agencies and individuals who are committed to reducing the incidence of suicide in the community.

The key objective of the committee was to organise a community walk in the central business district of Bendigo with the main purpose of raising awareness of suicide and encouraging the community to acknowledge and discuss the issue.

Since that time, the organisation has evolved to an incorporated body with the name of Suicide Prevention Awareness Network (SPAN) Central Victoria Inc. We have a committee dedicated to the cause of SPAN but are always looking for new members and member organisations to join us in the fight against suicide.
